ELINA DUNI & ROB LUFT: LOST SHIPS
Born into an artistic family in Tirana, Albania, in 1981, Elina Duni made her first steps on the stage as a singer aged five, singing for Albanian National Radio and Television. After the fall of the communist regime, she settled in Switzerland with her mother, where she started studying classical piano & thereafter discovered jazz. She went on to study on the jazz programme at the Hochschule der Künste in Bern. During this time, she formed the Elina Duni Quartet, which represented a return to her musical roots - a combination of Balkan folk songs and jazz. After two albums, “Baresha” & “Lume Lume”, both on Meta Records, the quartet went on to release for ECM Records in 2012, with “Matanë Malit” (Beyond the Mountain) & then in 2015, “Dallëndyshe” (The Swallow). These were highly praised by the wider European media for their lightness as well as their subtle manner of exploring Albanian folklore. In 2017 Elina Duni was one of the recipients of the Swiss Music Prize.
Rob Luft is an award-winning 28-year-old jazz guitarist from London whose virtuosity has been compared to that of six-string legends John McLaughlin, Al Di Meola & Paco De Lucia. He was the recipient of the 2016 Kenny Wheeler Prize from the Royal Academy of Music, and he also received the 2nd Prize in the 2016 Montreux Jazz Guitar Competition at Montreux Jazz Festival. His debut album, “Riser”, was released on Edition Records in 2017 to widespread acclaim from the European jazz media. John Fordham wrote in The Guardian that it’s a “very sophisticated debut, but given Luft’s old-soul achievements since his early teens, we should have heard it coming”. Subsequently, on the back of the success of his first album, Rob was nominated for a string of awards – Breakthrough Act in the 2018 Jazz FM Awards, Instrumentalist of the Year in the 2020 Parliamentary Jazz Awards and Instrumentalist of the Year in the 2019 Jazz FM Awards.
Elina Duni & Rob Luft’s programme of songs of love and exile has been gathering momentum since 2017, when the Albanian-Swiss singer and the English guitarist began their collaboration. The migration crisis, a theme explored on Elina’s Partir album, is again a central issue, so too ecological concerns. Material is drawn from many sources: “There are songs that touch upon past influences, with the sound of Albania and Mediterranean folklore ever-present. We wanted to explore other musical roots, too: timeless jazz ballads, French chanson, American folk song…” The broad range of music addressed runs from traditional pieces to original compositions, via songs made famous by Frank Sinatra and Charles Aznavour.
“Lost Ships” was released on ECM Records in November 2020. For this new project, Swiss-Albanian jazz singer Elina Duni is joined by guitarist & BBC New Generation Artist Rob Luft, one of the rising stars of London's flourishing contemporary jazz scene. Luft's playing incorporates echoes of West African high-life, Celtic folk and textural minimalism. His joyously original sound finds an ideal counterpart in Elina Duni's vocals. Together, they take us on an unforgettable journey through timeless folk songs which still resonate so truly today, as well as playing their own original material about contemporary issues facing us all.

Urodzona w 1981 roku w artystycznej rodzinie w Tiranie w Albanii, Elina Duni stawiała pierwsze kroki na scenie w wieku pięciu lat, śpiewając dla albańskiego radia i telewizji. Po upadku reżimu komunistycznego zamieszkała z matką w Szwajcarii, gdzie rozpoczęła naukę gry na fortepianie klasycznym, a potem odkryła jazz i studiowała jazz w Hochschule der Künste w Bernie.
W tym czasie utworzyła Elina Duni Quartet, który stanowił powrót do jej muzycznych korzeni – połączenie bałkańskich pieśni ludowych i jazzu. Po dwóch albumach, „Baresha” i „Lume Lume”, obydwa nakładem Meta Records, kwartet wydał w 2012 roku 2 albumy dla ECM Records - „Matane Malit”, a następnie w 2015 roku „Dallëndyshe”. Zostały one wysoko ocenione przez europejskie media za ich lekkość oraz subtelny sposób zgłębiania albańskiego folkloru. W 2017 roku Elina Duni była jedną z laureatek Szwajcarskiej Nagrody Muzycznej.
Rob Luft jest 28-letnim, wielokrotnie nagradzanym gitarzystą jazzowym z Londynu, którego wirtuozerię porównywano do takich legend sześciu strun jak John McLaughlin, Al Di Meola czy Paco De Lucia. Program piosenek o miłości i wygnaniu Eliny Duni i Roba Lufta nabiera tempa juz od 2017 roku, kiedy to albańsko-szwajcarska piosenkarka i angielski gitarzysta rozpoczęli współpracę. Kryzys migracyjny, temat poruszany na albumie Eliny „Partir”, jest ponownie centralnym zagadnieniem, jak rownież problemy dotyczące ekologii. Materiał zaczerpnięto z wielu źródeł: „Istnieją utwory nawiązujące do dawnych wpływów, z wszechobecnym brzmieniem albańskiego i śródziemnomorskiego folkloru. Chcieliśmy też zgłębić inne muzyczne korzenie: ponadczasowe ballady jazzowe, francuskie chanson, amerykańską pieśń ludową…” Szeroki zakres ich muzyki obejmuje zarówno utwory tradycyjne, jak i oryginalne kompozycje, a także piosenki rozsławione przez Franka Sinatrę i Charlesa Aznavoura. Album „Lost Ships” ukazał się nakładem ECM Records w listopadzie 2020 roku.
W tym nowym projekcie do Eliny Duni dołącza gitarzysta Rob Luft, jedna z gwiazd kwitnącej sceny współczesnego jazzu w Londynie. Gra Luft’a zawiera echa high-life’u z Afryki Zachodniej, celtyckiego folku i minimalizmu. Jego radośnie oryginalne brzmienie znajduje idealny odpowiednik w wokalu Eliny Duni. Razem zabierają nas w podróż poprzez ponadczasowe pieśni ludowe, których prawda rozbrzmiewa do dzis, a także poprzez własny, oryginalny repertuar opowiadający o współczesnych problemach, z którymi borykamy się wszyscy.
