‘Imogen Ryall sings The Charles Mingus/Joni Mitchell Songbook’

Jazz singer and lyricist, Imogen Ryall considers Joni Mitchell's album 'Mingus’ the foundation and springboard of her musical journey 'a door opener for me'. This album is a homage to that iconic original recording, highlights of which include 'A Chair in the Sky', 'God must be a Boogie Man' & 'Dry Cleaner from Des Moines'. Imogen says “I love the direction Joni’s album took with some of my favourite musicians of all time: Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock et al…” “our album is more of a nod to the acoustic setting of these songs that Mingus originally imagined”.

The album has already received extensive air play on Jazz FM and ‘Sweet Sucker Dance’ was also included amongst the presenters’ tracks of the week.

“I can’t think of anyone better to bring these brilliant songs to life. Imogen is, in every sense, the real deal” - Claire Martin OBE

“Together with her magnificent band, Ryall delivers captivating renditions of ‘A Chair in The Sky’ and ‘The Dry Cleaner From des Moines’ which shines a spotlight on her exceptional time feel” - Peter Quinn, Jazzwise (4 Stars and Editor’s choice)

Imogen and her superb quintet including sax and penny whistle legend, Julian Nicholas have an intensely personal relationship with this music, and we think it shows! Also featured are David Beebee on piano, Nigel Thomas on bass and Eric Ford on drums.

Imogen Ryall Described as possessing “a very lovely voice indeed” by Jazz FM’s Sarah Ward, Imogen’s skilful improvising and her unique and heartfelt interpretations of the jazz standard repertoire have made her a popular performer with both audiences and musicians alike. As a lyricist, Imogen has penned lyrics to several compositions by various composers including Larry Goldings and Carla Bley. Most recently, her lyrics appear on two albums by multi award-winning vocalist, Claire Martin OBE: ‘Bumpin’ - A Celebration of Wes Montgomery’ for Danish label, Stunt and "Believing it' for Linn Records. She also contributed lyrics to US vibes maestro, Joe Locke’s composition ’This Is Just to Say’ for the John Aram United Underground Orchestra’s 2022 album, ‘Rhapsody in Red’ featuring Tim Garland, Joe Locke and the voice of Amy Keyes.”

Julian Nicholas - saxes is a hugely respected and in demand saxophonist, composer, and band leader. He has worked extensively on the UK jazz scene with Loose Tubes; Eddie Parker Band; Carleen Anderson and Claire Martin, to name but a few.

Nigel Thomas - bass also an accomplished band leader and song writer, as well as being much in demand as a bass player. He recently released his own album of original songs 'Restless Soul' which has received extensive airplay on Jazz FM

David Beebee - piano is as much in demand for his piano playing as he is for composing, arranging and his work as a producer engineer at his recording studio 'Beeboss Records'. His most recent album of his own compositions 'Beyond the Clouds' has received much critical acclaim.

Eric Ford - drums again is in huge demand - he is a founder member of the internationally acclaimed band 'Partikel' and has worked extensively on the UK and European jazz circuit for many years.

„Imogen Ryall śpiewa Charlesa Mingusa/Joni Mitchell”

Wokalistka jazzowa i autorka tekstów Imogen Ryall uważa album Joni Mitchell „Mingus” za podstawę i odskocznię jej muzycznej podróży: „otworzył dla mnie drzwi”. Ten album jest hołdem złożonym temu kultowemu oryginalnemu nagraniu, do którego najważniejszych utworów należą „A Chair in the Sky”, „God must be a Boogie Man” i „Dry Cleaner from Des Moines”.

Imogen mówi: „Uwielbiam kierunek, jaki obrał ten album Joni, nagrany  z udziałem niektórych z moich ulubionych muzyków wszechczasów: Wayne’a Shortera, Herbiego Hancocka i innych…”

„Nasz album jest raczej ukłonem w stronę akustycznej oprawy tych piosenek, jaką pierwotnie wyobrażał sobie Mingus”.

Album był już szeroko emitowany w Jazz FM, a utwór „Sweet Sucker Dance”znalazł się także na liście utworów tygodnia wybranych przez prezenterów stacji .
